Activewear Entrepreneur Shares Tips On Building A Business

Whether you’re a mom on the go, like Sonia Kanner, or coaching the kid’s soccer game, being hands free is often unheard of. Keys, cell phones and wallets often call for more than just two hands. Ditch the idea of the dreaded fanny pack and join the revolution of the functional, yet flattering HipS-Sister waist pack.

5 a.m. and ready to take on the day, Sonia Kanner is checking Facebook – reading all the messages from those who are just as motivated as her. No more sleeping in for her inspired and passionate team at HipS-Sisters, instead they are working on delivering new, hip accessories to our busy lives.

So even if you are uber busy, take a minute to read our conversation with Sonia, the mind behind HipS-Sisters, to see how the hectic schedule just got a little bit simpler.

Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got the idea or concept for your business.

I was a stay at home mom, newly divorced. I had been out of the work force for a long time. I began an active-wear company and quickly realized that there was way too much competition in the market. I knew I had to come up with something unique.

I was toying with a few ideas and my father said, “Why don’t you make removable bands of fabric?” I didn’t really think much about it until minutes later, I was going for a walk and realized that I needed pockets. Boom – it hit me. Bands with pockets. The idea was born.

As a business owner, how would you define success?

Success is feeling good about yourself in the process. It’s not giving up on your values but making decisions that are aligned with them.

Success is constantly learning and growing, therefore evolving into a better version of  yourself.

Most of all, success is being able to take care of yourself and your children.

How do you find inspiration for new ideas within your company?

That I wish I could put into words – ideas flow to me. I make sure I spend a good amount of time alone, at my happy place (the Colorado River), and practicing yoga. These activities give me headspace for the creative process to flow.

What’s your productivity secret?

I wake up early every morning to read or watch a good interview – really love Super Soul Sunday series – to put myself in the right mindset as I begin my day.

Oh and my morning cup of coffee really helps!

What makes your company unique?

Our brand. Our message. Our desire to make connections and give back.

What were the biggest roadblocks in building your business? How did you overcome those challenges?
Choosing the wrong people to join me. While I wish I had listened to my intuition, I look back at those experiences and realize they shaped me into a better, stronger person. I overcame those hardships by leaning on those who are with me for the right reasons.

Building a brand and success is a true team effort. You can’t do it alone and why would you even want to?

If you could give three tips to someone just starting out, what would they be?

Get to know yourself. Be honest. What are your strengths, weaknesses?

As people join you on this journey, see if they can fill in some gaps (they should have skills that you don’t have) .

Once you establish a team, communicate constantly. Express your needs. Learn how to be a positive leader by figuring out what motivates your team (besides money). Include them in the process. Make them part of the story and success.
